The Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) 2019 call for proposals launched on 4th April 2019

BBI call 2019 in summary

The call 2019 is the sixth in a total of seven calls between 2014 and 2020 and the call has 4 strategic orientations: Feedstock, Process, Products, and Market uptake. Indicative budget for the call is 135 Million euros and the Annual Work Plan 2019 covers altogether 21 topics: 10 RIAs, 4 CSAs, 4 DEMOs and 3 FLAGs (flagship calls).

The Call deadline is 4 September 2019 and the indicative timing for the results is December 2019.

 Relation to the SC5 work programme 2018-2020

The BBI JU 2019 calls cover themes that come close to the Societal Challenge 5 topics such as wood-based materials, resolving end-of-life issues of plastics, developing performance of textile products and producing bio-based alternatives to harmful products or processes to protect and enhance human health and the environment.

General info about the BBI JU

The Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) is a 3.7bn Public-Private Partnership between the EU and the Bio-based Industries Consortium. Out of the total investment, 975 million euros come from the EU funds (Horizon 2020) and 2.7bn from private investments. BBI JU operates under Horizon 2020, and is driven by the Vision and Strategic Innovation and Research Agenda (SIRA) developed by the industry.

The aim of the BBI JU is to support a strong European bio-based industrial sector that will significantly reduce Europe’s dependency on fossil-based products, help the EU meet climate change targets, and lead to greener and more environmentally friendly growth.
